Plott Family Patriarchs*

  1. Henry Plott - first brought the dogs and family to Plott Creek in about 1799. His name is on the historical marker and all Haywood Plott people and dogs start with him. Cabin at Apple Hill Farm is part of the original homestead.
  2. Montraville Plott (1850-1924) - born, raised and buried in Plott Valley. Grandson of Henry and father to Plott legends Von, Sam, and John Plott.
  3. Amos Plott - Maggie Valley icon whose cabin still stands there today. Legendary bear hunter and guide for the Guyot Expedition. Waterrock Knob was originally named Amos Plott Balsam by Guyot and retained that name until the 20th century.
  4. Robert Henry Plott - nephew of Amos, and grandson of Henry. Also of Maggie Valley and his home is an historical site today. Another renowned hunter and dog man, also was the last Confederate prisoner released in the Civil War. In 1900 he was the largest landowner in Haywood County, he owned all the land from Soco Gap down to Dellwood, all of what today is known as Maggie Valley.
  5. Herbert "Hub" Plott - son of Robert Henry who lived in Maggie in the house his father built until his death in the 1970s. Another renowned bear hunter and dog man. He was featured in a 1952 Saturday Evening Post article.
  6. Henry Vaughn "Von" Plott - Probably the most famous of the modern day Plott family. Youngest son of Montraville, sold Plott dogs all over the world, served as hunting guide to baseball hall of famer Branch Rickey, died in 1970s.
  7. John A. Plott (1874-1959) - oldest son of Montraville Plott. Probably most respected breeder of all the Plotts. He lived in original Plott Farm house, now Apple Hills Farms. Possible think he built the farmhouse.
  8. George Ellis "Little George" Plott - killed in action in WWII at age of 32. Son of John A. Plott. Probably best hunter and breeder who ever lived, many feel the breed would be even better today had he survived the war. Was born in Kansas, but spent most of his life on Plott Creek.
  9. Samuel Plott - born on Plott Creek, son of Montraville, decorated veteran of WWI and also fought Pancho Villa in Mexico. Sam later moved to Chatsworth Georgia, but is recognized as one of the earliest Plott dog breed and Plott family historians.
